Trouble at the Blood Bank

(or I'd rather be at the Donut Bank)

I donated blood at the bloodmobile. They use these new automated blood pressure cuffs which are crap. Every time the bus wobbles a little or you shift a little in your chair, it can screw up the reading. The machine inflates the cuff and then releases the pressure a little bit at a time. He put the cuff on me, it blew up, then released and he announced that he didn't get a reading. He put a different cuff on and the machine blew it up very tightly. I don't know if it was pinching something but it hurt and not just a little. The pressure was being released and I was gritting my teeth and squeezing my eyes closed, waiting for some relief. It got to the point where the pain was almost doable and then the cuff blew up again. It will do this if it thinks it missed getting a reading. Now it was hurting bad again. I was squeezing my eyes tight and trying to relax, but it hurt so damn much. Never had a blood pressure cuff feel this awful. Psst. Psst. Psst. The machine was slowly letting the air out. I was trying to picture a pretty meadow to make myself calm down. Where was the nurse during all this? He might have been asleep. He might have been completely unable to read the obvious body language clues (frowning, tensing of muscles, eyes squeezed shut, grunting noises) of a person who was hurting. I don't know because I had my eyes shut. I wasn't saying anything in an attempt to be brave. Finally the pressure got down to a bearable range. I let out a sigh of relief. My body relaxed a little. Then the cuff reinflated to a tightness that threatened to sever me at the elbow. My whole body jerked. I was picturing Jesus coming to get me. I could take it no more. I clawed at the cuff and declared loudly that this was too much! The nurse removed the cuff, but didn't seem all that concerned that it was hurting me so bad. He put a different cuff on me, way down on my lower arm. The machine blew it up. He asked me if that hurt. I said no, this was the normal discomfort of having your pressure checked. The machine finally got a reading. Halleluia! 128/88.  What? My blood pressure is never that high, especially that bottom figure. I blame it on the stupid machine and my fight against its strangling, biting cuff from hell! Then he took my temp and pulse. Both high. Pulse of 93 and temp of 99.2. Gee wonder why? Ya know, this is not the first time the machine has had to try 2 or 3 times to get a reading. Human being used to do it just fine on the first try. Can we all agree that robots shouldn't be taking our blood pressure?

June Resolutions Update

Write a new job description for myself by end of April    ↓
I did not make this resolution by the time deadline. It is still a big concern, possibly an obsession, for me. I still want out. I am extending the deadline on this till the end of the year.

Fix car by end of May ↑
I did get the brakes fixed on the Pontiac before the end of May! Victory! Of course, about 2 weeks later, the Pontiac was totaled. On a bright side, the new car has no problem with the windshield wipers!

Read Old Testament by end of June  ↓
Not anywhere close to meeting this deadline. I had been reading other books of the Bible for classes. I will extend this through the end of the year. I am only up to Judges.

Spend at least 3 hours on housework per week.↓
This goal is stupid and I refuse to play anymore. I am lazier than ever. I just want to pay someone to clean the house and then never do anything here again, so it never gets dirty. I find I have no energy for housework. To be fair, I have been much busier this year outside of work than I was last year. Still starting housework is something I fail at over and over again.

Learn to play guitar, lose weight, skydive, join euchre club  ↓

Never went back to euchre club. I have not ruled it out, just haven't made time for it.
I have not lost any weight. In fact, while I have been eating less, I have been also been exercising less. I have lost muscle strength over the year.
Sky dive? Yea, I still want to do it someday, but, geesh, when?

Learn to play a new video game or computer game  ↓
I am done. Video games are a genre of entertainment that has completely and utterly defeated me. It makes me feel old. It makes me feel like an old dog that can't learn new tricks. It makes me doubt the flexibilities of my brain.

Set aside money for my little charities ↑
I have not purchased any clothes or shoes, except for a very cheap outfit and shoes (about $48 total) I bought for a wedding I went to. I also bought some very cheap t-shirts ($7 each). I found that I have few t-shirts for the summer and the weather is getting hot. Besides I had nothing cool to wear to Guatemala.

Speaking of Guatemala, I will have enough money to pay for the trip. I think the car accident was perhaps some divine intervention. Because of that totaling of the Pontiac, I got a check. I bought another car that costs much less than the amount of the check. I am setting aside some money from the surplus for future car repairs. I am also able to dip into that money a little bit (I don't need much) to help pay for Guatemala. Church also took up a collection from the congregation and each of us received almost $300 toward the trip. Susan also sent me some money. With all that help, I will able to finish paying for the trip. I will also have some spending money for the week that the family is down and I didn't think I would have that either.

Starting in August, I will be able to save for my other little projects that are due by the end of the year, one of which is to move out of this apartment into an apartment closer to work and church. We'll see how I do with saving this money.

The Week...with stock photos

All images found by Google image search.

1. Worked at Vacation Bible School all this week from 6 pm to 8 pm. The theme was Pandamania. All things panda-ish! The altar was decorated with bamboo, leaves, pictures of pandas.I was a team leader for the 4th and 5th graders. That meant getting them from place to place on a schedule, helping out with crafts or food or any problems they might have. Each night they watched one part of a 5 part movie mystery about someone stealing pandas from a panda preserve. Brittany, the lady in charge of VBS, assigned Seaver as team leader for this group along with me. Some nights, Seaver's wife would join us too. I was glad to have them along for support. The VBS was fun, and I hope meaningful for the kids. It was tiring. By Friday night, I was really really tired. A couple of nights, I got  up on stage with some adults to sing songs and do dance moves for the songs. I can't believe I actually did it. I had no mic (thank goodness!) so I didn't have to worry about my voice. There was lots of crafts, games, snacks, Bible stories, praying, singing, and more. It was a good week for me, spiritually recharging at times, but totally exhausting. Some nights I stopped by Cara's house after VBS to swim or play cards till 11 pm. So I would have been going from 6 am to 11 pm on those days. That's a long day for an old lady like me.

2. My car's gas gauge doesn't seem to work very well. When you first start the car, I think the gas gauge stops on the dial in the right place to indicate how much gas is there. But after a few seconds (like three), the needle floats up to full. I filled  the tank and set the trip odometer to zero. At about 200 miles, I put more gas in. The man who sold the car to me said I should bring it in to his mechanic when I hit about 150 miles so he could check it out. He said it can't be checked with a full tank of gas. I didn't have time to do that this week. The car also occasionally has trouble starting the first time. I need to take it in and have someone check it out, but once again, no time this week. Other than than those two minor things (yea minor), the car is running well and the AC is cold.

3. I watched Megamind, the animated movie from Dreamworks. It has Will Ferrell and Tina Fey as voices of the main characters. I thought it was a very entertaining movie. Will Ferrell does a spectacular job as Megamind. Minion, his fish side kick, is hilarious. The story was funny and the animation was very good.

4. I was sitting at my computer two days ago, when I hurt a soft and strange noise that seemed to be coming from the guest room closet. I keep the litter box in the guest room closet and I keep a thick plastic floor protector on the carpet to keep litter and litter box misses from making a mess. The sound, as I listened more carefully, soon became familiar to me. Drip, drip, drip. The sound of drops of water very infrequently hitting plastic. After shuffling things around in the closet, I discovered the a pipe running in the back of the closet is slowly dripping. I put a bucket under it and have not tended to it since then. I need to get this apartment looking less sloppy before I can call someone in to look at the drip. This makes two drips in my apartment now. Sigh.

My Sunday

I was up getting ready for morning church when I got a text from the Childrens Ministry director, Brittany. We had planned on discussing my helping out with Vacation Bible School this month. We were going to work out details after the morning service. She texted me that she was sick and would not be at church. I told her just to call me whenever she felt up to it. She wants me to be a team leader for the 4th and 5th graders. I would be responsible for keeping them in line, behavior-wise, and getting them to their stations on time. Since I don't know thing one about Vacation Bible School, I don't know what stations she is talking about. This is the kind of detail we were going to talk about Sunday morning. I am happy to help out, especially since the car situation is over. It is 5 nights in a row 6-8 pm. My concern is that I don't feel experienced or qualified to do any kind of teaching. I need to know what exactly is expected of me as a team leader. I would like to help out however I can.

I arrived at church about 5 minutes late. I like to go in the front entrance because you enter in at the back of the sanctuary. If I am late, I can go in through the double glass doors and can take a seat without disturbing anything too much. I also like it because I like to say hello to a certain man who is often stationed at this entrance as a greeter. He was there this morning. He was wearing a nice pink shirt which looked very nice against his dark skin. He greeted me as he normally does, with a big friendly hug. He handed me a bulletin. I commented that he looked very nice in the pink shirt. He was walking toward the entrance to the sanctuary with me. We were looking at each other while we talked and walked. I sailed through the right side doorway no trouble. But he ran right into the other door, the one on the left, which was unopened. He was not hurt thankfully. It made kind of a loud noise though and some people turned around to see. So much for my quietly sneaking in at the back.

After the sermon, the pastor always stands at the front of the church and invites anyone who needs a prayer or needs to talk to him to come forward, while the rest of the congregation sings the final song for that service. After that song, he asks one of the deacons or ministry leaders to do the closing prayer. We stand for this last song and last prayer. This morning, right after the prayer, I lifted my head and turned around in the pew to grab my purse. When I turned back to walk into the aisle, there was an older gentleman standing right in front of me, blocking my exit from the pew. He looked to be in his 70s. I had not seen him at church before. He introduced himself to me as Guy and asked me why he had never seen me at church before. Old men ask me this question a lot it seems but they are just making small talk. He then asked if I ever go to eat lunch with anyone from church after the service. I told him no, not really. He continued.

Man: What is your favorite restaurant and don't say McDonalds or Burger King.
ME: I don't really have a favorite restaurant. I don't go out to eat all that often.
Man: Well sometimes my son and his wife and me we go out to eat after church. Ever been to (don't remember the name) up on Ulmerton?
ME: No, never been there.
Man: When my wife was alive, we would go to Bradenton to eat a lot Ever been to (don't remember what place he said)? It's in Bradenton.

He seemed perfectly normal and seemed to have all his wits about him. I figured he was being real church-friendly and wanting to have lunch with some fellows members. But really, I had no intention of going to lunch with strangers, much less going all the way to Bradenton to eat  lunch with strangers.

Man: So do you eat breakfast out? Ever been to the (don't remember the name he said)? It's in Safety Harbor.
ME: No, don't get up to Safety Harbor. On occasion, I have met my friend and her kids at Perkins.
Man: (scrunching up his face in disapproval) Perkins? Ohhhh.
ME: (trying to be lighthearted) Oh come on now, you don't like Perkins?
Man: No.
ME: Sometimes my friend and I eat at E&E Stakeout in Belleair Bluffs. That's our favorite restaurant, but it's kind of pricey.
Man: Well what do you consider pricey?
ME: Well, a good entree can run you about $25. To me that's fancy.

Then he proceeded to tell me a story about this waitress he knew who went out to eat one time and it costs her and her date $300. I replied to him that that was indeed pricey. The way he talked about the waitress gave me the impression that she was more than just a server to him or he would like her to be anyway. I was getting a bit uncomfortable now, as he was standing very close and still blocking my exit from the pew into the aisle. He asked me what my last name was and then we discussed how German I possibly am. He kept talking about different restaurants. Now, I was getting the impression that he was not talking about going to a restaurant in a grandfatherly or Christian platonic kind of way. He ended the conversation by asking me to sleep on the idea of going out to eat with him. No more mention of his son or other family or other church members joining us. Then, just as quick as he had shown up, he abruptly turned and walked away. No goodbye. No see ya next week. Okaaay.

Finally I was able to leave the pew. I walked up to the front of the sanctuary and asked a particular member of the church who I trust if he had a minute. I had already wanted to talk to him about something else, but I had to start off by asking him if he knew an older man named Guy. He replied he did. I told him a bit of the conversation I had just had with Guy.

Me: What I want to know is this. Was he...asking me out on a...date?
Trusted church member: (smiling) Yea he probably was asking you out on a date. I think he has asked some other ladies out before.
Me: Oh, okay. I wasn't sure. He seemed at first like it was a fatherly gesture but after a while I thought, hmmmm? At least now I know how to answer him.
Trusted church member: Yea, yea, he probably meant it as a date.
Me: (laughing) Well I haven't been asked on a date in about 10 years so I wasn't sure. I'm out of practice!

I drove home from church and waited for the cable guy. He arrived around 3:45 pm. He was supposed to downgrade my cable, take the digital box with him, and replace my modem for one that is for internet only. Mine is for internet and phone. He stated he knew nothing about my needing a new modem. He asked me to just unplug the phone. He said he put a stopper on the line which will limit my channels and he left quickly. I am supposed to have only 23 channels of cable now and slightly slower internet service. Well my TVs in the bedroom still have 71 channels and the TV in the living room doesn't get any channels at all. Sigh. Brighthouse.

I had to leave for church at 4:30 to get there for a 5 pm meeting on the Guatemala trip. As I was turning my corner to head to Gulf Blvd, I saw my cable guy in the middle of the street, gathering up small silver objects from the road. Apparently the back of his truck opened up while he was driving and several things feel out, including two large buckets of nuts, bolts, and other metallic objects. They were scattered all over the road like broken glass. Cars were trying to turn onto the street from Gulf Blvd but they couldn't. I pulled over and got out and asked him if he needed any help. He laughed and said no. He commented that today was not turning out to be a good day. I left and went on to church.

After the meeting for the mission trip, I was working in the nursery during the pm service. There have to be 2 people there but no one else showed up but me. They made an announcement in the service and my friend Sherry came in to help me. Once the parents had all left, I could relax and have a good time. I hate having to watch kids when their parents are there. I don't feel like I can take control of the room, which is necessary when dealing with five 3 and 4 year olds. Everything went well except for a slightly questionable trip to the bathroom with one of the girls where she took off her shoes and underwear and wanted to play with the maxipads in the bathroom. I told her to put her shoes and underwear back on, as she ran around the bathroom bottomless. She picked them up and handed them to me with a look like, "I have no idea what to do with these." I had to put them back on her, which always makes me a little nervous. You can't tell what a kid is going to say to her parents. Oh, Miss Kelly touched my underwear today. I had no witness on that one because Sherry was back in the classroom with the rest of the kids. One boy put a plastic spider down the back of his diaper today and I had to retrieve that delicately also. That time I had a witness. All in all I like working in the nursery, even though it means missing church. Today was a busy day and a little weird also.

The New (used) Car

It's a Buick Century Limited. At 11 years old, it is very late model, but the mileage is good for a car that old. It has a clean Carfax report and has had only one owner in its life. I think it's kind of pretty. I like the way it drives and it is roomy without being too big for me. I have my concerns about the car (there's a lot of fancy trim on the outside that I see myself having to keep up with and I predict I will need to get a tire replaced before the year is out), but I got a good price on it and I like it. Best of all, by buying this car, I no longer have to look for a car to buy!

My old lady Florida car!

The front seat - I already have my requisite bunch of ponytail holders on the gearshift.

The backseat - both backseat bench and front seat bench have retractable cup holders.

Gonna try to keep it parked in the shade as much as possible.

New Eyes

I have been needing new glasses forever. I got this green BeBe pair of frames and lenses at least 5 years ago, if not longer. These glasses are held together in one piece by superglue. The lenses are scratched up. The temple pieces are corroded.

I was whining in the car with Cara and her kids on Sunday about all I need to do. One of those things was to get an eye exam. Madison called and made an appointment for me at Lens Crafters at the Largo Mall for today. Madison even called me today at 4 pm to remind me to go to my appointment. I don't know why I haven't gone earlier than this. Like I said, it was so needed.

I sat in the waiting room of the Lens Crafters for about 5 minutes while I filled out paperwork. On a flat screen TV attached to the wall, informational videos played. I learned about treatments for glaucoma. I learned where the macula of the eye is. I learned about eye vitamins. I was soon called by Theresa to do some preliminary tests. She was quite friendly. She did the glaucoma puff test and two other tests on two other machines. She read my prescription off my glasses. I don't know how they do that since those glasses were in such bad shape. Then she escorted me to the next office over and said the doctor would be in soon. Within 2 minutes, a female optometrist entered the room. I got a good feeling from her right away.  She probably got a bad impression of me though. See, she walked up to me and shook my hand and introduced herself as Dr. Homsi (pronounced home-zee). I replied with an eloquent, "Hey." I wanted to remember her name, so I repeated her last name in my head. Trouble was I didn't actually say it in my head; I said it out loud. So she introduces herself and gets the reply, "Hey, Homsi". Nice. It sounds like a rapper greeting. Yo, hey homsies!

She gave me the standard Which one is clearer? 1...or 2? 1...or 2? She put orange dye in my eyes, which she assured me would disappear in 30 seconds. This was a test for the moisture in my eyeball. She finished up all the tests and then we discussed options. She said my eyes looked great. She showed me pictures of my retina, optic nerve, and macula. They all look great, she said. I could have pointed out where my macula was on the picture because I had learned it from the waiting room videos. I told her that. Maculas look great. Blood vessels look great. Pressure is really good.. Right eye vision actually improved where left eye vision declined. I did not know it was possible for vision to improve. She was very friendly and smiled the whole time. She was kind of funny in spots too, which I always appreciate. I liked her and not just because she told me how great my eyes were!

I went there to find out about contacts. The doctors advised I have mild dry eye and that contacts are not recommended for me, at least for long hours of wear. I told her if she wanted to see wet eyes to just keep on telling me I shouldn't have contacts, because I might start crying. She told me I could wear contacts but that I had to be careful about not wearing them for long periods of time. She told me that I needed to use rewetting drops at least once a day too. But she told me I could certainly try them out and see how I do. So she fitted me with some contacts. I am trying them out for a week and then I go to see her again. The contacts I am trying are only for distance, so I need to wear reading glasses for reading or other up close work. She advised the dollar store readers are just fine for this purpose. I wore the contacts for 2 hours today. I am to add another hour of wear each day until I see her again next week.If my eyes look OK at the next visit, I will purchase a 6 month supply. The contacts I am getting are worn for 2 weeks and then thrown away. She recommended I not sleep in them. That is fine with me. I have no desire to sleep in contacts.

Contacts have improved so much since the last time I wore them regularly. Back in my day, you purchased one pair of contacts and you had to make them last for a long long time. I remember panicking when I lost or tore one. Now I will have plenty on hand to replace one if needed. Also, I had to make this solution by dropping a tablet into a special liquid and shaking the container until the tablet dissolved. Then I had to soak the contacts overnight in this protein-eating solution. The contacts would fizz when you put them in the concoction. There was one bottle with thick oily-feeling cleaning solution and another bottle with storing and rinsing solution. It was much more complicated back then. Now one solution handles all of it.

I got new glasses too, Ray Ban red tortoise shell frames. I tried on lots of frames. The minute I put this pair on, I knew I liked them. The girl who was helping me out in the frame department was also very good. She was helpful and competent and had a good personality. She was also a Cancer like me and we talked about how great Cancer babies are and how it is so true that the people we are close to in life often turn out to be Pisces or Scorpios.

My new glasses - sorry picture is so dark. Ooh, sorry that the bed in the background is not made either.

The problem I seem to have with glasses is that they never sit straight on my face. She and I could both see that the glasses were not exactly straight on my face. She attempted to adjust them a couple times. She said my ears were probably not the same height on the side of my head. She said this quietly to me, as if delivering some unexpected and unpleasant news. I told her that I really suspected that one eye is lower than the other and that this was the problem. She seemed relieved that I was aware of my less than perfect features and that I would not take offense at her ear comment. She called an associate over to see what he thought. The glasses were still sitting a bit crooked. He looked deeply into my eyes and then pronounced that the glasses are not sitting straight, that she needed to adjust the glasses this one little way to fix the problem, and that it was probably due to one ear being higher than the other. I made a crooked face and said jokingly, "poor little asymmetrical girl"! He leaned down and "comforted" me by saying, "Nobody's perfect. We are all a little asymmetrical." Thanks dude. The lady made one little adjustment to the frames after he left. I put them on my face and presto! they were sitting straight. We were both surprised and pleased!

I spent a little over $400 on the exam, glasses, and one pair of contacts. But this all came out of my HSA account, where I am quite wealthy. I then went to the Dollar Tree and got a pair of readers. I went to Target and bought normal sunglasses (whee!), not big grandma pupil dilation sunglasses that go over regular glasses, and some re-wetting drops. I am ready for any vision situation now!
